From Lived Experience to Leadership: April Maree Scott Runs for Paterson

Paterson, NSW – April Maree Scott has officially announced her candidacy as an independent candidate for the Paterson electorate in the upcoming 2025 Federal Election. With a deeply personal story and a strong professional background, Scott is committed to being a voice for the people of Paterson, focusing on the issues that matter most to the community—such as domestic violence, affordable housing, and critical infrastructure.

"My journey has not been typical of most politicians. As a teenager, I found myself homeless, and later in life, I survived domestic violence," Scott said. "These are experiences that shaped who I am today. I know what it's like to struggle and I know what it takes to overcome. That's why I'm running for Parliament—to ensure that the voices of those facing hardship are heard, and that real, urgent action is taken on the issues that matter most."

A professional with experience in accounting, business ownership, and executive leadership, Scott brings a wealth of expertise to her campaign. She has led organisations through major changes, always prioritising people’s needs. Outside of her professional career, Scott is deeply involved in her community, volunteering with the NSW SES Maitland City Unit and serving as a volunteer on multiple local community groups.

As an independent candidate, Scott promises to focus on practical, people-centred solutions. Her platform is built on the principles of Listen, Care, Act!, with a commitment to addressing pressing local issues, including:

  • Domestic Violence: Scott is committed to urgent action to address the domestic violence crisis. With rates of domestic violence in the Hunter Valley 50% higher than the state average, she will advocate for immediate support for frontline providers and concrete measures to protect women and children.

  • Affordable Housing: As the population in the Paterson electorate continues to grow, Scott is dedicated to advocating for policies that will address the shortage of affordable housing, ensuring that families have access to safe and secure homes.

  • Critical Infrastructure: With the region’s rapid growth, Scott will fight for better infrastructure, including transportation and community services, to support the expanding needs of Paterson residents.

Scott’s campaign is founded on her belief in integrity, transparency, and accountability. She will never compromise her values or answer to party bosses or special interests. Her focus will always be on delivering for the people of Paterson—not political agendas.

“We now have ten candidates running in our electorate for this federal election — a mix of independents, minor parties, and the major players. I’m genuinely excited to be part of this moment and incredibly proud of our electorate for stepping up and engaging in the democratic process. Our community is strong, and it’s clear that people care deeply about shaping our future together.”
